- A Finer Diner
- The original diner is gone, but the waitresses still dish it out at the Midway on Route 7 in Rutland. "Debbie" hollers good-naturedly across the dining room to a cop who's come in for a late lunch: "There's laws against people like you." He smiles, a regular. You get the feeling everybody knows each other at this all-purpose eatery with a view of the road and a Mobil Mart. At the Midway, you can fill up on breakfast anytime — not just pancakes and French toast, but bagels and lox or eggs benedict. They serve New England boiled dinner on Thursdays, prime rib on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
- Once upon a time, the Midway was open 24 hours a day. Now it stops serving most nights at 8 p.m. Diner diehards may miss the old place, but they can still take in the pictures on the walls of the storied mobile restaurant, which was sold to a collector in Pennsylvania. The new "improved" interior hasn't compromised the skin-on fish 'n' chips or any of the other selections of honest comfort food, though. In a town that doesn't pretend to be glamorous, diners will always take functional over funky. And maybe a piece of that strawberry-rhubarb pie.
